Richard Spencer - Head of Sustainability, The Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW)

Richard Spencer is Head of Sustainability at ICAEW. He joined ICAEW in 2005 in order to set up the sustainability practice within the Technical Strategy department. During this time Richard has led on the ICAEW's thought leadership and engagement programme in sustainability.

Before joining ICAEW Richard worked as a strategy consultant in the Natural Resources division of Accenture. Prior to that he held a number of roles at N M Rothschild & Sons Ltd in the bank's treasury and natural resources project finance teams as well as spending a year at Rothschild Australia, a sister organisation. Richard began his career at the Bank of England in banking supervision.

Richard holds degrees from the universities of Leeds and London. He is a Visiting Fellow of the Cass Business School, Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Hull Business School and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the FTSE4Good Policy Committee, the Climate Disclosure Standards Board Technical Working Group and the Fédération des Experts Comptables Européens (FEE) Sustainability Working Group.

Bettina Windau –Director, The Future of Civil Society, Bertelsmann Stiftung

Bettina has 20 years of experience in philanthropy and nonprofit organisations. Since she joined the Bertelsmann Stiftung in 1991, she has been responsible for education, philanthropy and civil society programmes in Germany, Spain, Egypt and Poland as well as international experts' networks and associations.

From 2008 until 2011 she was chairing the Capacity Building Committee of the European Foundation Centre EFC in Brussels. As an expert for evaluation and organisation development she is a trustee of the Social Impact Analysts Association SIAA in London.

Bettina holds degrees from University of Applied Science Hamburg and Bern University. As a volunteer she works as Chair of a Community Foundation. She is married and has two children.


Jeremy Nicholls - CEO of The SROI Network

Jeremy Nicholls became the chief executive of the Social Return on Investment (SROI) Network in 2008. Starting his working life as an accountant, his work has increasingly focused on understanding and managing the value of the impact of organisation’s activities.

He set up the Cat’s Pyjamas running events to promote the value of social enterprise and shortly after started working on the development of SROI. He wrote’ There is no business like Social Business’ with Liam Black and co-wrote the UK Government supported ‘Guide to SROI.’ He is the chair of FairPensions, a director of the FRC Group - a social business based in Liverpool and a director of Social Evaluator - an online platform for the analysis of social returns.

As an occasional lecturer he has lectured at several Universities including Said Business School at Oxford University. Cambridge University and the University of Western Australia.

Karl Leathem - The SROI Network

Karl leathem has been chair of The SROI Network's Assurance Panel for the last three years taking forward the development of the membership assurance process over that time. He is a founding director of The SROI Network.

He created Lodestar over ten years ago - a consultancy largely providing support services to social economy organisations but also to the Statutory and Private sectors. Karl is an experienced SROI practitioner having by end of 2011 produced over 20 studies in fields such as disability, arts projects, community initiatives, employment programmes, industrial relations, work with young people, work with children & families and a range of counselling and advocacy delivery services.

Current SROI projects include a study of community work at one of Belfast's "Interface areas", and an analysis of street & club based youth work with young people from some of the most disadvantaged areas of London.

Jennifer InglisManaging Director, VIE and Director of The SROI Network

Jenni Inglis is Managing Director of VIE, which supports the public and not-for-profit sectors to create value in their supplier/customer relationships. She specialises in public sector commissioning and evaluation using SROI. Her clients include Social Finance Ltd, Charities and Housing Associations, Local Authorities, National Audit Office, Department of Health, NHS Trusts and Universities.

She has been a Director of the SROI Network since 2008, was awarded accredited practitioner status in 2009 and is an assessor for the assurance of SROI reports. She has written SROI-related publications for the Local Government Group including "Commissioning for Maximum Value", (Local Government Association, 2012).

She previously worked for a social enterprise agency and set up many innovative projects to support social enterprise and influence policy. She continues to support social enterprise as a Director of The Melting Pot in Edinburgh.

Jenni has an MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice from the University of Bath (2007), and her first career was in capital investment in the sugar industry.
Sarah McCoy - Senior Researcher, The SROI Network

Sarah McCoy is a Senior Researcher at The SROI Network. After graduating from Birmingham University with a degree in business, Sarah spent several years in commercial research where she gained professional qualifications as a social researcher. Inspired by the power of using information for positive change, she then made the shift to the third sector where she was Head of Research and Evaluation for the online charity YouthNet for four years. Sarah holds an MSc in Psychological Research Methods and her work has been published in academic journals. In her 'spare time' Sarah is training to be an aerobics instructor.

Tim Goodspeed - Training Manager, The SROI Network

Tim Goodspeed has been the Training Manager since 2008. He has a background in economic development and social enterprise. He is an experienced trainer and an Accredited Practitioner. Tim is one of the authors of the Guide to SROI and has written and been involved in many SROIs. He is also a member of the Methodology subcommittee and is actively involved in developing and applying SROI.

Marlon van Dijk - Managing Director, social e-valuator™

Marlon van Dijk (1983) studied Business Economics in Amsterdam and started her career at Scholten&Franssen – consultancy for social enterprises – where Peter Scholten trained her to become a self-employed SROI (Social Return on Investment) consultant.

Combining business value with social impact is her vision. Marlon van Dijk started her own company M-resultancy aiming for impacts. Her ambition is to confront organizations with complex social issues and help them develop a business mind that can create social impact and positive change. From January 2012, Marlon is the Managing Director of social e-valuator™ and works closely with the the International SROI Network – Accounting for Value.

Peter Scholten - Value Game

Peter Scholten (1959) is an independent international consultant working to support social entrepreneurship, bridging the gap between non-profits and for-profits. Peter stimulates social entrepreneurship through consultancy and training, with fields of expertise including business planning, social investing, performance measurement and earned income strategies. Clients include major for-profits, smaller non-profits and investors and foundations in Europe as well as in developing countries.

Peter Scholten introduced Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology in Europe and has published three books on SROI. Together with his business partner Boris Franssen he published a Guidebook on Social Entrepreneurship. This book has also been translated into the German language (“Handbuch Sozialunternehmertum”). Peter is one of the initiators of the SROI-web tool Social Evaluator and developed the ValueGame® in 2010.

Before starting his own consultancy, Peter worked with many social enterprises in the Netherlands for 25 years. He received his MBA at Rotterdam School of Management and has studied in the USA (Atlanta and Harvard).

Hugo Narrillos Roux - Independent Consultant

Hugo Narrillos Roux has been a member of The SROI Network since 2008. He works both as an independent consultant and in a Spanish bank. Although Hugo´s background is Investment Banking, since 2007 he has undertaken several SROI studies for both Social Enterprises and for-profit companies, and has published several articles about SROI. In 2011 Hugo undertook an SROI study that was presented in October in the Madrid Stock Exchange. Hugo holds a PhD in measuring social value from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid (Spain), and a Degree from the École Supérieure de Commerce de Montpellier, France.

Erik Nilsson - Expert on organizational control, Serus

Erik Nilsson has a PhD in Strategic management control and holds a position as an associate professor within the field of Economic Information Systems at Linkoping University, Sweden. Erik’s research is focused on how management control tools (such as SROI) can be used to implement strategies and thereby reach overarching goals.

Erik has trained over 100 people in SROI (both basic and advanced training) and delivered many speeches on the concept in his role at SERUS, currently the only organisation in Sweden promoting the use of SROI. In the last 6 months, Erik has facilitated the development of the Swedish SROI Network in collaboration with The SROI Network Intl, also developing a Swedish assurance process in which he is an assessor.

Additionally, Erik and a colleague at SERUS are currently in the final phases of writing a Swedish book on SROI. This will be used during SROI training and to spread the word about SROI in Sweden. They are also in the planning phase of putting together a research based anthology in regards to different aspects of SROI.

Daniel Fujiwara - Senior Economist at Government Economic Service & Researcher (PhD Behavioural Science) at London School of Economics

Daniel Fujiwara is a lead adviser on valuation techniques for non-market goods and cost-benefit analysis in the UK Government. He was previously head of cost-benefit analysis at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and has also worked as a senior economist in the policy evaluation team in the Ministry of Finance, Tanzania.

He developed the DWP's social cost-benefit analysis framework and guidance and he recently wrote new HM Treasury Green Book guidance on valuation techniques. He has undertaken and overseen a large number of public sector impact assessments and programme evaluations both in this country and in Tanzania.

Daniel is currently undertaking a PhD in Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics. His research develops innovative ways to value non-market goods and evaluate policy effectiveness using subjective well-being data, field experiments and neuroscientific methods. He has extensive experience in estimating monetary values for a range of non-market goods including crime, health, volunteering, employment, education, sport and art and culture.

Eilis Lawlor -  Director, Just Economics

Eilis Lawlor is a director of Just Economics Research Ltd; a company that works extensively with SROI. She has worked with the SROI methodology since 2006, initially in her role as lead researcher and then as Head of the Valuing What Matters Programme at the new economics foundation.

She has published SROIs on a range of policy areas and is a co-author with Jeremy Nicholls of the official Cabinet Office guide to SROI. She continues to be involved with the work of the Network through participation in the assurance sub-committee and the National Council. She is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Sussex from which she also holds an MSc in Research Methods.

Sara Burns -  Director, Triangle Consulting

Sara Burns is a founding Director of Triangle Consulting Social Enterprise and co-author of the family of Outcomes Stars. She leads on the development of new versions of the Star, the Star Online and responding to the extensive and growing interest in the Stars from service providers and commissioners. She also leads on the development of Star training and works with Triangle Co-Director Joy MacKeith on the use and applicability of the Star within SROI. 

With a background in research, evaluation and a period in the Latin America department of Christian Aid, Sara pioneered a practical outcomes approach for voluntary organisations in the early 1990s and has worked in this field ever since. Her early work showed how outcomes could benefit service providers and their clients and won the Charity Awards in 2000. She is author of a number of publications on Outcomes.

Stefan Koch - Senior Expert, UPJ

Stephan Koch has been a management consultant since 1996 and he has been working as a trainer and coach since 2002.He has carried out numerous consulting projects for different companies and organizations including Audi Akademie, E. ON, European Central Bank, Generali, KPMG, Siemens, Telefónica, the University of Mainz, etc.

Since 2002 he has been establishing and developing the departments of consultancy and training for the network of committed companies and non-profit intermediary organizations in Germany UPJ e.V., where he still functions as a Senior Expert.

His projects at UPJ focus on the development and implementation of CSR, corporate citizenship and corporate volunteering strategies, as well as human resources development projects. Moreover, he collaborates at a regional level within the team of the federal initiative UPJ in the Rhein-Main region.In addition to his business degree at the University of Saarbrücken, the University of Michigan Business School (Ann Arbor) and the Universidad de Sevilla, he has continued further education as a trainer and coach at the universities of Trier (ABP-psychology) and Mainz (education).

Gundula Coellen - Senior Consultant, Stakeholder Reporting GmbH

Gundula Cöllen has been a member of the SROI Network since 2010 where she functions as a SROI Practitioner. She has studied business and economics in London and gained her first professional experience while working as an analyst for a British investment company. Along with her move to Sydney, she subsequently sought for opportunities in Australia to become more active in the social sector. Thus she took notice of the social venture model and started working there as an analyst focussing on Social Return on Investment for Social Ventures Australia.

Since mid-2011, Gundula is back in Germany to promote Impact Investing. She works as a Senior Consultant in the field of CR corporate reporting and impact measurement of social investments for Stakeholder Reporting, as well as an independent SROI consultant for nonprofit projects.

Sara Olsen - Founder, SVT Group

Sara Olsen founded SVT Group, an impact accounting firm, in 2001, with the vision of making impact accounting a standard practice worldwide. Analogous to a financial accounting firm, SVT works with clients to measure, manage and communicate their social and environmental value.

SVT's recent work includes collaboration with: OneCalifornia Bank and Foundation, Nemours, Park Tree Investments, and the Environmental Investment Advisor to CalPERS, Environmental Capital Group.

Sara blogs at www.socialedge.org and has written many publications on impact measurement for private equity and philanthropy. She teaches impact accounting workshops internationally, and has co-founded several projects designed to increase the flow of money to good, including the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC). Sara holds an MBA from UC Berkeley, an MASW from the University of Chicago and a BA from Dartmouth College. She lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ken Ito - Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University

Ken Ito has a bachelor degree in economics and MBA in International Management from The American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in the United States. Ken spent ten years in the private sector, with his last position at GE Capital. He subsequently joined the Institute for Strategic Leadership (ISL) to launch the Center for Social Innovation, to promote social innovation through its leadership training programs. He has also organized the Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) in Japan award, part of the global SEOY program of Schwab Foundation in Switzerland.

Ken has been a partner at Social Venture Partners Tokyo since 2005, running its venture philanthropy fund to support and nurture local social entrepreneurs. He teaches at Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University as Assistant Professor from 2010. His research topic includes quantitative analysis and measurement on social impact and he is actively promoting SROI by organizing seminars and trainings.

Thomas Meier-Ahrens - CEO, nordprojekte

Thomas is CEO of nordprojekte Kaufmann & Parter (www.nordprojekte.de) where he specialises in the coordination of national and European projects, evaluation of projects using SROI, acquisition, project management, fundraising and the development of projects. 

Oliver Kempton – Senior Partner, Envoy Partnership

Oliver is an evaluation and communications consultant. In 2011 he co-founded Envoy Partnership, a consultancy that aligns social impact evaluation with communications strategy and change management. Oliver's focus includes the integration of robust well-being measurement and valuation into SROI, and the implementation of social impact measurement into business management systems.

Prior to founding Envoy Partnership, Oliver worked as a consultant at the new economics foundation, where he managed the SROI training course and trained over 500 people in the UK, Australia and Sweden. Oliver is an SROI assessor for the SROI Network and a lecturer in SROI at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Carien Borst - Team Managaer, Emergis, The Netherlands SROI Network

Carien Borst (1983) works as a team manager at Emergis, an organization for mental health care in The Netherlands. Carien will present a case study on a work centre where people who suffer from psychiatric and psycho social problems can rehabilitate and recover through work. She will present the results of the analysis and talk about the importance of work in the longterm care and living.

Times are changing; the more business like approach in mental health care, cost cutting, changing legislation and money flow, feed the urgency to know and communicate about our social value.

Carien has been a member of the SROI Network since 2010. She has been trained and supervised by Marlon van Dijk and Peter Scholten.

Stephanie Robertson – President, SiMPACT Strategies, SROI Canada

Stephanie Robertson founded SiMPACT Strategy Group in 2004 and launched LBG Canada in 2005. Her management and project experience is intertwined across the for-profit, non-profit and public sectors. Through her career, Stephanie has led many diverse initiatives, including the creation of Generation 2000, the development of the SROI Primer educational tool and the upcoming national launch of the SROI Canada Network.

As the first accredited SROI practitioner in North America, Stephanie is a leading professional in the area of social impact management and measurement. She is well known for her effectiveness as a teacher and as a powerful communicator on how to create value through investment in community and society.

Les Hems - Director of Research, Centre for Social Impact

Les Hems has spent the past 18 years undertaking a range of major initiatives that have served to develop the evidence base for third sector research, policy and practice.

Les was instrumental in designing and implementing the free website www.guidestar.org.uk launched in December 2005 and more recently has spearheaded the social enterprise activities of GuideStar Data Services CIC - including the development of the market for third sector data involving financial institutions, government, academia, and the third sector itself. Les has played a pivotal role in a number of UK government initiatives including the National Survey of Third Sector Organisations.

His research career commenced at Aston Business School. In 1994 he established the research team at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), in 1998 he became a principal researcher for the Johns Hopkins University Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, and in 2000 he established a new research centre at University College London which became part of the Institute for Philanthropy. Les has taught a Voluntary Sector Policy course at UCL for many years, and is chairman of the Coventry Sports Trust.

Liz Riley - Impacts and Contracts Manager, CREATE

After almost 20 years in the Civil Service, most of which had been spent asking 'So did that work? What did it achieve?' Liz left the civil service and spent a couple of years asking the same questions in Sri Lanka on behalf of a small national NGO called Peace and Community Action. There, Liz had the challenge of trying to measure 'intangible' outcomes, such as improved relationships between community groups and individuals and increased self-confidence, using methods such as 'Most

Significant Change' and more conventional qualitative evaluations.

Back in the UK again, Liz decided to find out more about SROI as a way of measuring and valuing this type of outcomes and putting them into context to estimate the whole impact of a project or activity. Having completed SROI training, Liz then persuaded her employers, the Create Foundation, to let her practise her new found skills on their Academy programme.

Although frequently challenged by the complexities of valuing outcomes, Liz is working to embed SROI based impact measurement within Create so that it become integrated in the way they work. Liz's aim is that everyone working in Create, their stakeholders and investors understand the extent of the impact they make on the lives of the homeless and vulnerable people Create work with and use this information appropriately in the work they do.

Michael Vollmann – Fellowship Director, Ashoka Germany

Ashoka supports social entrepreneurs worldwide. Michael Vollmann heads the Fellowship Programme and the Community Impact Development Group (CIDG) for Ashoka Germany. Before, Michael has been coordinating the German selection process of new Fellows for two years. In 2008, he finished his thesis on "Social Entrepreneurship in Germany" in collaboration with Ashoka.

During his studies in languages, economics and cultural studies at the University of Passau and the Universidade do Estado de Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), he dealt extensively with cooperation in international development, etc. through the establishment of an active university group. He gained insight into this subject during his time as a community worker in Chile and Bolivia, during a number of internships and through the worldwide network of scouts.

Philipp Hoelscher – Director of Research, PHINEO

Philipp Hoelscher heads the research and analysis department of PHINEO in Berlin, an analysis and consulting company for effective community involvement.

PHINEO recommends outstanding charitable projects which passed its evaluation process. The aim is to support social investors in their commitment. In addition, PHINEO generally wants to strengthen the impact orientation of community projects and social investors.

Previously, Philipp Hoelscher worked as a scientist and project manager for several civic organisations including the Maecenata Institute for Philanthropy and Civil Society and the Amadeu Antonio Foundation. His work focuses on social investment and impact analysis of social commitment.

Philipp Hoelscher studied political science and communication and holds a PhD on political influence strategies of human right NGOs. He is the author of numerous publications on civil society, foundations and social investment.

Miriam Scherf - Senior Consultant, PricewaterhouseCoopers AG WPG, Sustainability Services

Miriam Scherf is a senior consultant in the department of sustainability services. She has extensive experience reporting, auditing and consulting in the field of sustainability management. Her focus is on corporate citizenship and the evaluation of the effect of social engagement. Prior to joining PwC, Miriam Scherf has supported the Eco-Innovation funding scheme as a trainee in the General Directorate of Environment of the European Commission. She completed a Master of Science in Environment and Business at the University of Abertay Dundee.

Anne Pattberg - Senior Manager, PricewaterhouseCoopers AG WPG, Sustainability Services

Anne joined PwC in 2011, advising clients on sustainability strategy development, stakeholder engagement and the implementation of sustainability programmes in organisations. She also sits on the AA1000SES Technical Standards Committee and has been involved in a number of thought leadership projects in the areas of integrated reporting and the future of sustainability.

Prior to her work at PwC, Anne headed the sustainability department in Camelot Group plc, reporting into CEO Dianne Thompson. Her role included drafting, advising and implementing Camelot's sustainability strategy with particular focus on the company's responsible marketplace programme and stakeholder engagement processes. Camelot was the first company in the UK to adopt the AA1000 Assurance standard and won several prizes for its non-financial reporting.

During this time Anne also chaired the European Lotteries Responsible Gaming Working Group and was responsible for the development of a Pan-European Responsible Gaming Standard which has been signed by more than 79 European lotteries. Alongside her role in Camelot she was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Corporate Responsibility Group Ltd.

Anne holds an MA in International Business from the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS) and a Master of Science in Economics from the Copenhagen Business School with specialisation in Corporate Social Responsibility & Intercultural Management.

Before working in Camelot, Anne has worked as a consultant on sustainable development for Novo Nordisk in Denmark with particular focus on social and environmental supply chain issues, reporting and socio-economic impacts. Before working on corporate responsibility she was working in supply chain departments of various multi-national businesses with assignments in Germany and Mexico.

Miriam Scherf - Senior Consultant, PricewaterhouseCoopers AG WPG, Sustainability Services

Miriam Scherf is a senior consultant in the department of sustainability services. She has extensive experience reporting, auditing and consulting in the field of sustainability management. Her focus is on corporate citizenship and the evaluation of the effect of social engagement. Prior to joining PwC, Miriam Scherf has supported the Eco-Innovation funding scheme as a trainee in the General Directorate of Environment of the European Commission. She completed a Master of Science in Environment and Business at the University of Abertay Dundee.

Robert Münscher – Head of Consulting, Centre for Social Investment

Dr. Robert Münscher heads the consulting department of the Centre for Social Investment (CSI) at the University of Heidelberg. The CSI aims to promote the vision of the commons and foundations through research, teaching and consulting. The consulting department of the institute makes expertise and research findings accessible to practitioners and organisations.

Dr. Robert Münscher graduated from the Law and Economics Faculty of the University of Bayreuth and has a Masters in Analytical Philosophy, Social Psychology and Roman Languages at the University of Bielefeld. Besides his work at CSI, he is managing partner of JHRM Intercultural Competence in Heidelberg since 2003, an agency for management training, coaching and consulting in the field of intercultural management.
